Is Michael Mann Backing Away from the Climate Change Hockey Stick?

Maybe Michael Mann is seeing the writing on the wall because it looks as if he is taking a giant step backwards away from his invention, the climate change hockey stick. The Penn State professor now says his hockey stick should not have become 'climate change icon' and it was 'somewhat misplaced' to make his work an 'icon of the climate change debate'.

The climate change hockey stick is a graph created a little over decade ago that was supposed to show global temperatures for the last 1,000 years. The graph plots out a sharp rise in temperature over the last 100 years as man made carbon emissions increased, creating the shape of a hockey stick. The problem is that Mann's data has been proven bogus many time over.

... speaking to the BBC recently, Prof Mann, a climatologist at Pennsylvania State University, said he had always made clear there were "uncertainties" in his work.

"I always thought it was somewhat misplaced to make it a central icon of the climate change debate," he said.

Mann's claim that he never wanted his hockey stick belies the truth. At the time the graph was developed, there were actually two graphs being developed. Scientists didn't want to use the Mann version because they weren't sure about his numbers. Mann insisted that his version was the one that should be used because it looked more dramatic.

According to uncovered documents, Mann and his team wanted to present a simple story for policy makers, Others wanted scrupulous honesty about uncertainties contained in Mann's chart.The IPCC's core job is to present a "consensus" on the science, but in this critical case there was no easy consensus.

The tensions were summed up in an email sent on 22 September 1999 by Met Office scientist Chris Folland, in which he alerted key researchers that a diagram of temperature change over the past thousand years "is a clear favourite for the policy makers' summary"

But there were two competing graphs – Mann's hockey stick and another, by Jones, Briffa and others. Mann's graph was clearly the more compelling image of man-made climate change. The other "dilutes the message rather significantly," said Folland. "We want the truth. Mike [Mann] thinks it lies nearer his result." Folland noted that "this is probably the most important issue to resolve in chapter 2 at present."

The evidence shows that while people were suspicious of Michael Mann's research, Mann wanted his graph used because it more compelling. His "walking back" from the graph has more to do with the fact that it has been proven bogus, than any previous desire that it "not become an icon."

Colonel Wendell Fertig

Wendell Fertig was an American civil engineer, in the American-administered Commonwealth of the Philippines, who organized and commanded an American-Filipino guerrilla force on the Japanese-occupied, southern Philippine island of Mindanao during World War II.

Fertig, a civilian, had a reserve commission in the U.S. Army and was called back into the military before the war in the Pacific began. Ordered from Corregidor before its surrender to the Japanese, he was sent to Mindanao and assumed command of engineer activities there. Almost as soon as he arrived the U.S. Army forces on Mindanao surrendered, but Fertig refused to do so.

Lieutenant Colonel Fertig decided that if he was able to resist capture, then it made sense that other American military personnel did as well; they would need leadership. He also considered that hundreds of Philippine scouts could be used as guerrilla assets against the Japanese if they could be located and persuaded to follow him. However Fertig was also a realist; what chance would he have of commanding any force of men as a newly promoted lieutenant colonel, and a civil engineer? So Wendell Fertig promoted himself to the rank of Brigadier General, United States Army and formed one of the most fantastic guerrilla operations in America’s entire history.

After a long period of organization, Fertig led the fight against the Japanese in hit-and-run raids and vital intelligence gathering activities. He amassed over thirty thousand armed men, the equivalent of an Army Corps, which included American forces who had managed to escape as prisoners of war, and fighting men of the Philippine Islands. His command finally made contact with U.S. forces in the Pacific using a homemade radio. Fertig's forces then began to receive supplies (medicine, radios, ammo, etc.) by submarine, but never enough to stage large scale attacks. More than once the Japanese tried to destroy Fertig and his guerrilla army, committing large numbers of troops for this purpose. This continued until the American forces returned to the Philippines, landing first on the island of Leyte.

After the war, Fertig was promoted to Colonel and received the Distinguished Service Cross. Many felt that he should have received the Medal of Honor, as well as a bigger promotion, but he did not receive them due to politics and small mindedness on General MacArthur's part. Despite this he never complained about not receiving the honors others felt were his due. He returned to his civilian engineering career, but continued his service as a reserve officer. He spent four years as the commander of the ROTC detachment at the Colorado School of Mines and served in a U.S.-based psychological warfare unit during the Korean War.
Wendell Fertig died in 1975 at the age of 74. For many people in the Philippine Islands, and indeed among many regular Army personnel, he will always be regarded as General Fertig, a true American hero. He deserves to be remembered by us all.


Thank you again to Mustang. For me, Colonel Fertig's story was inspirational on the virtues of never giving up and to fight the bastards to my last breath, a lesson I really need now when I look at the near ruin my country is in.

Great Seal to be Updated by Progressives

Brothers and Sisters, today I heard about the administration's move to change our Great Seal. This is an outrage of the first order. I know that the administration has a fetish for symbolism, and a disregard for our traditions, and the symbols that go with them, but this is too much. It is time to push back.

The government today announced that it will be changing its emblem from an Eagle to a Condom because it more accurately reflects the government's political stance:

Wine and Water

To my friends who enjoy alcohol, and those who don't.

As Ben Franklin said:
In wine there is wisdom,
In beer there is freedom,
In water there is bacteria..

In a number of carefully controlled trials, Scientists have demonstrated that if we drink one liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than one kilo of the Escherichia coli (E.. Coli) bacteria found in feces.

In other words, we are consuming one kilo of poop.

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor), because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember:
Water = Poop, Alcohol = Health.

Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of shit.

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as a public service.

Joke of the Week

This is another funny story that probably is not true, but should be. Tip O' the Hat to Chris L. for this weeks chuckle.

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in he looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, “God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I’ll give you exactly 15 minutes.” The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop.

Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, “Here I am God. I’m still waiting.” It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him, knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold.

The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked, stunned, and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, “What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?”

The Marine calmly replied, “God was too busy today protecting American soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So, He sent me.”

American Patriot/Hero of the Week

Apparently you have to select the "Publish Post" button instead of the "Save Now" button to publish a post. Who knew? Seriously though, user error is the reason why "Tuesday's" Patriot/Hero post is going up on Friday. You have to be smarter than the software, and this week I guess I just did not qualify. So without further ado, I give you this weeks Patriot/Hero.

First Lieutenant Alonzo Cushing

The West Point graduate and his men of the Battery A, 4th U.S. Artillery were defending the Union position on Cemetery Ridge against Pickett's Charge, a major Confederate thrust that could have turned the tide in the war.

Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee was planning an invasion of the North; both sides knew how important this engagement was.

Cushing commanded about 110 men and six cannons. His small force along with reinforcements stood their ground under artillery bombardment as nearly 13,000 Confederate infantrymen waited to advance.

The bombardment lasted two hours. Cushing was wounded in the shoulder and groin, and his battery was left with two guns and no long-range ammunition. His stricken battery should have been withdrawn and replaced with reserve forces, Hartwig said, but Cushing shouted that he would take his guns to the front lines.

Confederate soldiers advanced into the Union fire, but finally retreated with massive casualties. The South never recovered from the defeat.

The soldier's bravery so inspired one Civil War history buff that he took up Cushing's cause by launching a Facebook page titled "Give Alonzo Cushing the Medal of Honor." Phil Shapiro, a 27-year-old Air Force captain, said such heroism displayed in one of the nation's most pivotal battles deserved recognition, even at this late date.

Secretary of the Army John McHugh has approved the request, leaving a few formal steps before the award becomes official this summer. Cushing will become one of 3,447 recipients of the medal, and the second from the Civil War honored in the last 10 years.

Global Warming Wednesday

Tip O' the Hat to Sammy Benoit at Yid with Lid for this week's debunking of Global Warming. The proof just keeps rolling in that this is a hoax of epic proportions. I am not one to buy into conspiracy theories, but the whole "Climate Change" nonsense is starting to look that way.

BAD NEWS For Global Warming Moonbats Thickest Ice Cap in Years

Oh Boy, poor Al Gore! He has had such an awful few weeks. First it was the announcement that he is separating from his wife of 40+ years. Then the revelation of his affair with friend Larry David's ex-wife, and today the biggest blow of all. A new observational study shows that the arctic ice is thicker than it has been in years, striking a blow to Gore's Billion Dollar Climate change buisness.

The Arctic meltdown is not as bad as some of the moonbats suggest at least according to geophysicist Christian Haas of the University of Alberta. His international team flew across the top of the planet last year for the 2,412-kilometre survey. They found large expanses of ice four to five metres thick, despite the record retreat in 2007.

"This is a nice demonstration that there is still hope for the ice," said Haas.

The survey, which demonstrated that the "bird" probe tethered to a plane can measure ice thickness over large areas, uncovered plenty of resilient "old" ice from Norway to the North Pole to Alaska in April 2009.

The thickness had "changed little since 2007, and remained within the expected range of natural variability," the team reports in the Geophysical Research Letters.

There is already speculation about how the ice will fare this summer, with some scientists predicting a record melt. Haas said he doesn't buy it.

He said the ice is in some ways in better shape going into the melt season than it has been for a couple of years. "We have more thick ice going into the summer than we did in 2009 and 2008," he said.

Much will depend on the intensity of the winds, and how the ice fractures and is blown around, he said. "But any talk about tipping points, a sudden drop and no recovery . . . I don't think it is going to happen."

.....Part of the problem with ice forecasting is that it based largely on data from satellites. They are good at measuring how large an area is covered by ice, but tell little about its thickness — which can measure in mere centimetres in the case of new ice, or metres in the case of ice several years old.

Its the equivalent of making a weather forecast without looking out the window. Which is the problem with most of the global warming predictions, which are based on computer modeling without the benefit of observation.
